How to find your Minecraft seed on Java, Bedrock, Realms and servers
Where to find the seed of your world, on every edition and kind of world, and what to do when you can't.
Updated on .
Every world has a seed, the number the game built it from. With it you can see your whole world on a map before exploring it, find the closest village or stronghold, and share the exact same world with your friends. Here's where to find it.
Java Edition, singleplayer
Open the chat (T) and type /seed. It works with cheats off too, and you can click the seed in the chat to copy it. It's also saved in the world's level.dat file (you can read it with an NBT viewer) if you don't want to open the world, but the command is way easier. The wiki has all the details.
Bedrock Edition (phone, console, Windows)
Pause the game, open Settings, and you'll find it under Game, next to "Seed". Same on consoles, phones and Windows, and just looking at it doesn't turn off achievements. It's the number you typed when you created the world, or the random one the game picked.
Realms
A Java Realm doesn't show the seed in its settings, and only the owner (who is an operator) can use /seed there. If the Realm isn't yours, download a backup (Realm settings, World backups), open it in singleplayer and type /seed. On a Bedrock Realm, download the world the same way and check the seed in its settings.
A server that isn't yours
On a server /seed needs operator rights, so ask the admin: most of them will just tell you. If they won't, on Java a seed cracker can figure it out from what you see in the world, with a mod and some walking around.
Got it? Now use it
Paste it on the seed map and pick your edition and version to see spawn, structures, biomes and strongholds. The structure finder lists the closest villages, trial chambers, ancient cities or fortresses to your coords, and the slime chunk finder shows you the slime chunks.
Questions
I used a word as my seed. Is that the same as the number?
Yep. When the world is created, the text becomes a number, always the same one for the same text, and that's what /seed shows you. Seeder takes both: type the word and it uses the same number.
Does the same seed give the same world on Java and Bedrock?
From 1.18 on you get the same biomes and terrain, but different villages, strongholds and a different Nether. Pick the right edition on the map.
Does reading the seed turn off achievements on Bedrock?
Nope. The seed is right there in the world settings, and looking at it isn't cheating. What turns achievements off is turning cheats on, for commands like /locate.
