Nether portal calculator

Travelling through the Nether can be the fastest way to cover long distances, since every block in the Nether corresponds to eight blocks in the Overworld. Enter where you are, or where your portal is, to get the matching spot on the other side. Build your portal there and the two should link (conditions apply).

How to use it

  1. Build a portal and DO NOT go through it. Stand next to it and press F3: the "XYZ" line shows your coordinates.
  2. Paste your coordinates into the box of the dimension you are in. The Y value is optional: it always stays the same.
  3. Go to the other dimension through another portal, far from the one you just built. Build a new portal as close as possible to the coordinates shown in the other box, and match the Y value when you can (see below why).
  4. Go through your portal and voilà, the two are now linked.

How portal linking works

Every time you step through a portal, Minecraft looks for an existing portal around the matching spot on the other side: up to 128 blocks each way in the Overworld and 16 in the Nether. If it finds one, it uses it; otherwise it creates a new one.

Questions

Why divide by 8?

Because one block in the Nether is eight blocks in the Overworld, but only for the X and Z coordinates. The values are rounded down: Overworld X -1 is Nether X -1, not 0. The Y coordinate stays the same.

My portal went to the wrong one!

Check how portal linking works on the wiki. You probably messed something up!

Does Y matter?

Not for the conversion itself, but to find the nearest portal the game measures the distance in 3D, Y included. This means a portal 30 blocks above you can lose against a lower one a bit farther away. Also remember that in the Nether, Y 128 and above is on top of the bedrock roof.

Can I use it for Nether highways?

Yep! Convert the coords of your start and end points, then dig a tunnel between the two points in the Nether. 1k blocks in the Overworld are just 125 in the Nether.

Is it the same in older versions?

Mostly. The conversion is the same, but the way portals link is not: before 1.16.2 the Nether also searched 128 blocks each way, so a lot of portals ended up linking to the same one.
